Love the clever humor of this.
… Final comparison:
Not only do I truly enjoy the classic, “Dial ‘M’ for Murder” but this year’s spoof in “Tree House of Horror XX” is sheer brilliance in it’s humor and references. Here’s the episode:
Look for these references:

And, as noted in the wikipedia article, music from North by Northwest. (“The Knife,” appropriately)
One last more subtle observation:
There is also a nod to the “Vertigo”/Dolly zoom effect in this Simpson’s clip. Be sure to watch for it - it’s a hallmark of Hitchcock.
Post here, if you saw any other references - won’t you?

I just finished re-watching one of my favorite shows from memory.. “The Soldier and Death” as presented in “Jim Henson’s The Storyteller” (1989). Even though the show looks a little dated, the reality is: shows (and puppetry) simply aren’t done this way anymore. This story continues to captivate and plays out much like a Grimm’s Fairy Tale. In truth, I see a little bit of a common denominator between this classic Russian tale and Beedle the Bard’s/Harry Potter’s deathly hallows fables.
